Jera Nelson Cunningham, Ph.D.
Dr. Jera Nelson Cunningham holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition, Dr. Cunningham attended college at Wake Forest University and earned her Master's degree in clinical psychology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, winning the psychology department's outstanding graduate student award. She completed her clinical internship at a community mental health center in Northwest Indiana. Both her coursework and clinical training has primarily focused on working with children and families. To further specialize in children and families, Dr. Cunningham completed a post-doctoral fellowship at VCU's Virginia Treatment Center for Children. Her first position after becoming a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Virginia was as a clinician on the Children's Team at the Hanover Mental Health Community Service Board. She has also worked with clients in a private practice setting and conducted psychological evaluations and testing at a residential treatment facility for youth.
Dr. Cunningham's focus is therapy with children, families, and couples, as well as, conducting psychological evaluations. Dr. Cunnigham believes it is important to work WITH parents and children to determine what type of treatment will work the best for each family or child. Her work is guided by family systems theory, interpersonal process (relationship focused), attachment, and behavioral therapy. She also uses cognitive-behavioral therapy when needed. Dr. Cunningham enjoys working with a variety of ages, concerns, and problems that children and families encounter.
