Carla M. Shaffer, Ph.D.
Dr. Carla M. Shaffer holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Dr. Shaffer has a long-standing relationship with VCU where she also earned her Master in Psychology and Bachelor of Science degrees. Dr. Shaffer completed her clinical internship at the VCU Health System’s Virginia Treatment Center for Children in Richmond, VA. She completed a clinical and research Postdoctoral Fellowship through VCU’s Clark Hill Institute for Positive Youth Development. As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Virginia, Dr. Shaffer works in private practice and as adjunct faculty with the VCU Psychology Department, providing clinical supervision to psychology graduate students working in integrated primary care. Dr. Shaffer’s clinical interests focus on anxiety disorders and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
In her role at Partners in Parenting, Dr. Shaffer will specialize in evidence-based treatment of anxiety disorders and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). She is trained in Exposure with Response Prevention (ExRP), the gold standard for treatment of OCD, and Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), a novel parent-focused program to help children manage their anxiety and/or OCD. Dr Shaffer is bilingual and able to provide culturally-sensitive evaluations to English- and Spanish-speaking children and parents. She is trained in comprehensive psychological evaluations.
